Regular Writers & Columnists for The Free Press

Thomas McAdams ("Mac") Deford was a foreign service officer from 1965 through 1977, serving initially in Vietnam, and subsequently in the Arab World, including Beirut, Jidda, and Amman. He joined Merrill Lynch International in 1978 and was assigned in Latin America and Asia. He ran Merrill's Asian private banking unit from Hong Kong; after retiring from Merrill Lynch in 1997, he moved to midcoast Maine full-time, though he continues his frequent travels to the Middle East. He serves on the Board of Advisors to the University of Maine's new School of Policy and International Affairs and is president of the Midcoast Forum on Foreign Relations. He began writing a column in The Free Press, a weekly newspaper serving midcoast Maine, after the September 11 attacks.

Joe Steinberger was born in Boston in 1944. A practicing Maine lawyer since 1972, he became a resident of Rockland in 1982 when he built with his own hands his small home on Gay Street Place. In 1986 he co-founded Penobscot School, Rockland's center for language learning and international exchange. In 2001 he founded WRFR-LP, Rockland's community radio station. He is past member of the zoning board of appeals, parks commission, and city council. With his wife Keiko, Joe owns Suzuki's Sushi Bar in downtown Rockland. Joe's first child,Takuma Suzuki Steinberger, was born on July 28, 2007. Raising Tak is Joe's current preoccupation and a frequent subject of his column.

Georgeanne Davis has been writing for The Free Press since 1995. A member of the Garden Writers of America, she writes a weekly home and garden column and on art, architecture, the environment and other subjects. She has been a resident of Tenants Harbor since 1979.

Eva Murray moved to Matinicus Island in 1987 to teach in the one-room school. Two years later she married the island electrician and stayed to raise their family there. Over the years she has started a small bakery, become an emergency medical technician, taken on a number of roles in municipal government and volunteer organizations, started the community's recycling program, and been a first responder to emergencies both real and imagined. Since 2003 she's also been a regular columnist for several mainland publications. Eva bakes bread in a wood stove, spins wool, digs potatoes, collects useful herbs, cuts hay with a scythe and swings a blacksmith's hammer. (Not surprisingly, she sometimes writes her articles with pencil and paper.)
